چکیده

We study the impact of spike-timing-dependent synaptic plasticity (STDP) on coherent gamma activity between distant cortical regions with reciprocal projections. Our simulation network consists of two areas and includes a STDP model re4ecting e5cacy suppression between pre/ postsynaptic spike pairs as found in recent experiments during stimulation with spike trains (Nature 416 (2002) 433). We 8nd that STDP in conjunction with oscillatory common input strengthens synapses with delays around multiples of the oscillation period. As a result, intrinsic excitatory interactions between the areas express in gamma waves with zero lag synchrony (instead of unphysiological anti-phase synchrony without STDP). We discuss the impact of e5cacy suppression on learning convergence and robustness. c © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Spike timing dependent plasticity: mechanisms, significance, and controversies

Long-term modification of synaptic strength is one of the basic mechanisms of memory formation and activity-dependent refinement of neural circuits. This idea was purposed by Hebb to provide a basis for the formation of a cell assembly. Repetitive correlated activity of pre-synaptic and post-synaptic neurons can induce long-lasting synaptic strength modification, the direction and extent of whi...

Synaptic plasticity, conduction delays, and inter-areal phase relations of spike activity in a model of reciprocally connected areas

Multi-electrode recordings revealed that fast oscillatory (30–60 Hz) spike activity is often synchronized with zero phase lag, even for recording sites in distant cortical areas. We show in this simulation study that the dominance of zero-phase correlations is inconsistent with the long conduction delays measured between distant areas: For realistic delays, reciprocally connected neuron populat...

Self-Organized Near-Zero-Lag Synchronization Induced by Spike-Timing Dependent Plasticity in Cortical Populations

Several cognitive tasks related to learning and memory exhibit synchronization of macroscopic cortical areas together with synaptic plasticity at neuronal level. Therefore, there is a growing effort among computational neuroscientists to understand the underlying mechanisms relating synchrony and plasticity in the brain. Here we numerically study the interplay between spike-timing dependent pla...

Biophysical and Phenomenological Models of Multiple Spike Interactions in Spike-timing Dependent Plasticity

Spike-timing dependent plasticity (STDP) is a form of associative synaptic modification which depends on the respective timing of pre- and post-synaptic spikes. The biophysical mechanisms underlying this form of plasticity are currently not known. We present here a biophysical model which captures the characteristics of STDP, such as its frequency dependency, and the effects of spike pair or sp...
